The short answer: check first, then clean
Before you clean silver jewelry, identify what you can: solid silver or silver plate, bare metal or coating, stones or pearls, glue or mechanical settings, intentional oxidation or unwanted tarnish. If the product details or maker instructions answer those questions, follow them. If they do not, treat the piece as unidentified rather than guessing from color.
For an unidentified piece, the cautious starting point is inspection and a clean, dry, soft lint-free cloth used with light pressure. Water, soap, polishing cloths, commercial polish, dips, baking-soda methods, toothpaste, ultrasonic machines, and steam all depend on the complete construction. Stop when a setting moves, a coating changes, the cloth lifts unexpected color, or the construction is uncertain.
Before cleaning, check the whole piece
The words around a piece matter. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission explains that sterling or sterling silver describes a product containing 92.5% pure silver, while silver plate is a silver layer over a base metal. “Silver-tone” describes appearance without establishing silver content. A stamp can be a useful clue, but it does not reveal every coating, repair, stone treatment, glue joint, or fragile setting.
Do not test an heirloom, valuable piece, or unidentified piece with aggressive home chemistry. Photograph the piece, note any marks, find the receipt, order details, or maker page, and ask a qualified jeweler or conservator when identification would change the treatment.
- Check the product details: base metal, alloy or fineness, plating or coating, stones, treatments, adhesives, finish, and maker care instructions.
- Inspect front, back, seams, hinges, clasps, prongs, cords, and stone seats under bright light.
- Ask whether dark areas are intentional oxidation, recessed patina, dirt, or tarnish before trying to remove them.
- Treat pearls, organic gem materials, enamel, porous or treated stones, glued parts, and uncertain coatings as separate care problems.
- Write down what is uncertain. “Material unknown; wipe only” is more useful than a confident but unsupported recipe.
Choose by material, not one universal recipe
Remove, check, clean, dry, put away
Remove the piece over a clear, padded surface so a small component cannot disappear. Inspect it in the condition produced by real wear: look for movement, snag points, loose stones, residue, surface change, and anything trapped in seams or hinges.
Use only the gentlest method supported by the piece’s verified materials and construction. Work on one piece at a time. Keep the sink drain closed, or rinse over a separate container rather than an open drain. Do not continue simply because a brighter surface looks possible.
Dry every compatible wet-cleaned piece completely, including recesses and closures, before it touches another piece. Then return it to a separate tray, pouch, or box. If the surface changed unexpectedly, stop there and ask a jeweler before cleaning it again.
What to know before using each cleaning method
Why toothpaste, baking soda, dips, and “one weird trick” are not the default
A household substance being common does not make it compatible with every jewelry surface. Toothpaste and abrasive pastes can scratch or change a finish. Baking-soda and aluminum methods, chemical dips, vinegar, and long soaking can affect plating, coatings, porous materials, adhesives, or intentionally darkened details. This page does not certify them for an unidentified piece.
GIA treats ultrasonic and steam cleaning as material- and construction-dependent, not as universal upgrades. Pearls should not go into ultrasonic or steam cleaners; other organic, coated, filled, treated, heat-sensitive, or fragile materials can also be unsuitable. A machine cannot identify a material you do not know.
Preserve the finish instead of chasing shine
Silver tarnish is a surface reaction associated with sulfur-containing gases. Canadian Conservation Institute guidance for museum silver also makes a useful caution clear: repeated polishing or chemical tarnish removal takes some underlying silver with it, and a thin plated surface can be damaged or removed. Museum pieces and wearable jewelry have different use conditions, but the principle still argues against unnecessary polishing.
A sculptural piece may use recessed darkness, contrast, tool marks, or surface variation intentionally. Cleaning is not restoration, and “factory-new” is not always the correct finish. If you cannot distinguish unwanted tarnish from intentional oxidation or patina, stop before changing the surface.
Tarnish is not rust—and plated is not solid
Does sterling silver tarnish? Yes. Sterling silver can tarnish as its surface reacts with sulfur-containing gases; that change is different from iron rust. “Does silver rust?” is therefore the wrong material question: silver does not form iron oxide, though a base metal beneath damaged plating may corrode in its own way.
Can silver plated jewelry tarnish? The silver surface can tarnish, while wear may also reveal or affect the base metal beneath it. Do not polish plated jewelry as if silver continues through the whole piece. The gentlest compatible method and the maker’s instructions matter because repeated abrasion can thin a plated surface.
Will sterling silver tarnish at the same speed for everyone? No fixed timeline applies. Air, sulfur exposure, moisture, storage, contact and finish all affect what you see. Slow the need for cleaning with dry, separated storage, then remove only confirmed unwanted tarnish without erasing intentional darkening or texture.
Store it dry and separated
After the piece is completely dry, store it so hard edges, chains, stones, and polished surfaces do not rub each other. A tray, divided pouch, or small box is useful only when it creates enough spacing and does not press on the piece. Keep the maker instructions close by for the next clean.
A separate space protects the finish, prevents tangles, and makes the piece much nicer to meet again.
When exact product care details are available

Until those details are verified, follow the exact maker instructions or ask a qualified jeweler. Do not assume a piece is waterproof, tarnish-resistant, safe for ultrasonic cleaning, or compatible with every cleaning method.
